George R.R. Martin is never going to finish A Song of Ice and Fire

I hadn't really thought about it for a while, but I was reminded recently that George R.R. Martin has still not finished his A Song of Ice and Fire series of books.

He started the series way back in 1996, with A Game of Thrones. The last published part was A Dance With Dragons in 2011 and, at that time, he was anticipating the next installment, The Winds of Winter, to be out by about 2014. That's now 10 years ago.

Last we heard - November 2023 - he still had about 1,100 pages of that book written (!), the same number as he had in 2022. So, it seems like he either has writer's block, or just doesn't really care any more. He has published other books in the meantime, including Game of Thrones offshoots and prequels, and much of his time has been taken up with screenplay work for the Game of Thrones TV series (and offshoots like House of Dragons).

So, many fans have just given up on ever seeing The Winds of Winter, let alone the planned series coda A Dream of Spring, and a good number of them just don't really care any more, myself among them. Which is unfortunate, and maybe an indication that Mr. Martin doesn't really care much about his readers. With the great success of the Game of Thrones television franchise (and its offshoots), he's clearly not hurting for money. And maybe that says it all.
